Addis Ababa's Merkato is one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. Clothing, shoes, bags and household goods pass through its wholesale lanes on the way to shops across the country. Ethiopian importers who supply Merkato traders look for new goods at a price that leaves room after freight, inland transport and duties.

Bank permit and foreign currency come first

In Ethiopia the import permit and access to foreign currency go through your own bank. The rules have changed several times, so check the current position with your bank before you commit to a lot. We do not ship until payment terms and your bank's process are clear. Once your bank confirms, we prepare the proforma invoice and documents it asks for.

What Ethiopian importers ask for

All goods are new and unworn: export surplus, cancelled orders, overruns and end-of-season lines. Minor-fault B-grade items are always disclosed. To pick a source, see the five source countries compared.

How do stock lots reach Addis Ababa?

Most lots land at Djibouti port and move to Addis Ababa by the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway or by road. We ship to Djibouti and your forwarder handles the inland leg.

Do I need a bank permit to import stock lots into Ethiopia?

Yes, the import permit and foreign currency are arranged through your bank. The rules change, so confirm the current position with your bank before you commit to any lot.

Will you ship before my bank approves foreign currency?

No. We wait until your bank's process and the payment terms are clear. Kifayatullah prepares the proforma invoice your bank needs, then confirms route and documents for the order.

Is Berbera an option for Ethiopian cargo?

Berbera in northern Somalia runs a corridor toward Ethiopia and some importers use it. Djibouti remains the main route. We confirm which port can serve your shipment.

Do you have an agent in Merkato?

No. Global Pioneer has no office, licence or agent in Ethiopia. We work from Dubai and deal with you directly by WhatsApp and email, and your own agents handle Djibouti and Addis Ababa.

Are the goods new or second-hand?

New only. Our lots are export surplus, cancelled orders, production overruns and end-of-season stock. Any B-grade pieces with minor faults are disclosed before you pay.

Can I combine garments and shoes in one container to Djibouti?

Yes. We can consolidate goods from different sources at Jebel Ali in Dubai and ship one mixed container to Djibouti for your Addis Ababa business.
